Who is the hatch?

Jason Parkes, Winemaker

A riddle. A Mystery. A mystery wrapped in a riddle, wrapped in a vest. A man of the Earth, this most jovial of chaps our lovely Jason might well be the greatest winemaker nobody’s heard of. But we have, and we love him. And we love his wines. And we love that he makes our wines. Jason is refreshing relaxed for a man with such great responsibilities.

Better know a ‘winemaker‘ series of fun facts:
1. Boxers or Briefs? Neither. Prefers a silky négligée.
2. List of favourite herbs most to least: Sage, Parsley, Thyme, Rosemary
3. Highlight of career thus far: That time he turned an actual grape into an actual wine. It was awesome.
4. Disraeili or Gladstone?: Neither. Life long Peelite
5. Wish he was a little bit taller, wish he was a baller, wish he had a rabbit in a hat with a bat and a six four Impala?: Yes to all above.
6. Knows what his employees write on their websites?: Ah, no comment.
Looking to contact Jason by email? No. Preferred contact method is carrier pigeon.

Andrew Melville, Chief Steward

Born, as they say, in the tooth of a gale, Andrew Melville was born and raised in Bangor, Maine. A love of the sea runs deep with-in this grizzled old sea dog and Andrew spent most of his early years as an amateur sailor. Once the call of the sea abated, Andrew attended Vasser College where he earned a Masters in Astrobiology. But life on land was not for him, and lo It was with this degree he set out to work back at sea, with Carnival Cruise Lines. Tirelessly dedicated to clean lavatories and customer service, he quickly climbed the ranks and become Chief Steward aboard the ‘Carnival Imagination’ in 2004. In 2009, on a port of call to Vancouver (Washington) Andrew met his wife, Big Linda and decided to retire from the service; returning to the land once life began. Emigrating to The Okanagan in 2014, Andrew has transitioned his sea based skills to wine country and is now instrumental in all aspects of life at ‘the hatch’. Andrew and Big Linda are still happily married, and are expecting their 3rd child in the spring of 2016.
Andrew loves email, and email loves Andrew –

Grayson Riordan, the Prince of Tides

Grayson was in ‘the hatch’ the day it opened, back in the hinterdays of May 2015. This was a simpler time back then for reasons beyond us. But also, that was thee day Grayson decided to become a ‘man’ so to say. That was the day he decided to work for us, ‘the hatch’.

It took about 12 months of convincing us that he should actually work here though. He’s from Ontario, and worked for wineries out there; so theoretically he knew what he was doing. And boy was he ever right! In May of 2016 we called him and literally said ‘Cabin boy, it’s time you became a Cabin Man!’ And with that, Grayson was born. Born, and hired. Thusly, Grayson drove cross country in a car that doesn’t even have a muffler to join us at ‘the hatch’.

He’s passionate, enthusiastic and chiplomatic. People like him, and so will you. He works most days, and will dazzle you with his wit and jovial nature, along with his keen sense of grapes.

Big news, he now has an email, and it’s AMAZING –

Justin D.  Anello, Falafel Aficionado

Justin D. Anello is a former child actor known for his role as Screech on Saved by the Bell. He later appeared in a sex video and on reality TV.

Born on January 7, 1977 in San Jose, California, Justin D. Anello entered the world of acting as a child. In 1988, Justin D. Anello began playing the role of Screech on the Disney Channel’s Good Morning, Miss Bliss. After the series was cancelled, a few of the characters, including Screech, were transplanted to high school in the sitcom Saved by the Bell. Post-Bell, Justin D. Anello put out a 2001 instructional video, Justin D. Anello Teaches Chess. In 2009, Justin D. Anello published a tell-all memoir called Behind the Bell, focusing on his experiences on the set of his childhood hit. In December 2014, Justin D. Anello was arrested in Wisconsin for allegedly stabbing a man during a fight in a bar.

Justin D. Anello brings to the hatch all of that, and a bag of chips. Chips in the flavour of knowledge, experience and passion. Justin D. Anello will be looking after on-premise accounts in the interior amongst other sensual duties. We also assume he’s really into Levantine cuisine too.

Jon Q. Bernard , Gubernatorial Candidate

Webster’s dictionary defnes the word ‘Jonathan’ as
1. a son of Saul and friend of David according to the account in I Samuel
2. american; especially : a New Englander
3. a medium-sized red-skinned apple

I can’t think of 3 ways more apt to describe Jonny of our hatch. But wait, there’s more to him than just that. Jonny is from Winnipeg, interestingly enough. He moved out this valley of the Okanagans almost 69 fortnights ago on a quest to discover himself and the selves of others. And what has he discovered, this Dora the Explorer of ours?  Mostly that a life without love is hardly a worth living at all. What else do we know about Jonny? Just that he puts the ‘p’ in passion and that passion is for wine. He’s a trusted and valuable member of the team here and we’re proud to have the opportunity to exploit his youthfulness for all its worth. He is currently our our D2C manager, so if you’re curious about boxes and putting things in those boxes, holla at yo Jonny.

Salman Rushdie, author

Salman Rushdie is an Indian-born English novelist and critic, famous for fantastical novels about the post-colonial relationship between cultures of the East and West. Raised in India and Pakistan, he was educated in England and emigrated there in 1965. A graduate of Cambridge University (1968), Rushdie worked as an actor and in advertising until the success of his second novel, Midnight’s Children (1981, Booker Prize), allowed him to work as a writer full-time. That novel cemented Rushdie’s literary fame, but he became even more famous for the controversy stirred by his 1988 novel The Satanic Verses.

Paul Morstad, esteemed artist

For it was with Paul that our humble little hatch, ‘the hatch’, found its look. Much like Stella getting her groove back, the vivacious Paul Morstad allowed us to get out of our rut, and into a grove.

Paul was raised in the Western provinces of British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Alberta. The geography, people, flora and fauna of these places have a strong influence on his paintings, drawings, and films. He lives and works in Vancouver, BC.

Obviously, Paul’s art is amazing much in the sense that the human who created it, Paul, is also amazing. Circular logic always wins the day, and in doing so, here’s a link to Paul’s site where you gaze in amazement at the majesty of his mind:

Ryan Hooper, key accounts manager & wine samurai

Here are the facts on this guy we call Ryan Hooper (and so should you!). Ryan grew up on Vancouver Island and as I recall worked in a bakery at some point in time. Ryan first came into my life in the late 2000’s and life has been great ever since. Ryan is WSET accredited and handsome. Ryan will be looking after Key Accounts in GVRD and Victoria, fact! Ryan is a terrific photographer, a terrific cook and can line dance like you ain’t never seen before. Those are facts, and you can them all the way to the bank; the money bank!

Do you need some wine or what!?

Mikayla Jones, vivacious/useful

There’s a lot that could and should be said about Mikayla Jones. One could talk about her upbringing, her dedication and passion towards things. One could mention the fact that she has hobbies, and probably dreams of some sort. One could also recall that incredible story of her winning the 1994 Tennessee State U21 spelling bee. One could do a lot of things you might say, but obviously we won’t do any of that. I would do anything for love, anything you’ve been dreaming of, but I just won’t do that. What I will do is say that Mikayla Jones is a terrific albeit tiny human being who is of a delightful disposition and has a smile that will warm the coldest of heart cockles, and that’s a hatch guarantee! Don’t believe us? Whatevs.

Ask Mikayla all the things you want to know, but don’t –
