Black Swift Vineyards 2015 ‘Long Road’ Syrah

This vintage of Long Road Syrah is entirely from the incredible Hans Estate Vineayrd, located directly below the Mission Hill Oculus block on the East Osoyoos Bench. Enjoying a very high degree of slope and directly West facing, this location has shown to produce some of our most opulent and intense Syrahs in The Okanagan.

All de-stemmed after gentle sorting at the winery, this wine was fermented slowly at 25 degrees Celsius to fully maximize extraction of the abundantly ripe fruit. After fermentation was complete, the wine was finished in a mix of new and older French oak (50/50) for 16 months. This vintage has an incredible mixture of concentration and elegance. Despite the intensity at this stage, the wine remains beautifully smooth and pleasant to drink at this point, but shows enough stuffing to it that indicates it will have a long and complex life ahead.

‘There’s better acidity and less chocolate up front in the 2015, giving Long Road a more serious demeanour in the glass. Look for black licorice, black pepper, a whiff of leather and deli meats with a super fresh finish. It will need some time in bottle for all the components to meld but it should be worth the three to five year wait. Grilled lamb or beef is in order for the moment. The wine spends 16 months in a 50/50 mix of new and older American oak. Long Road is a 100-acre vineyard at the northern extent of the Osoyoos Bench. It was planted in 1999 to clones 99 and 100 and is sustainably farmed at 3 tons to the acre. 89 points
